cosy warm homeIt is fair to say that you likely have plenty of options, locally, when it comes to heating engineers and boiler installers. What’s more, these companies and experts will likely all tell you that they are the best at what they do! You’ll also find that there are plenty who trade on being ‘cheaper than the average’.

However, when it comes to something as important and as safety-intensive as a boiler and heating system, you should always take the time to look for an engineer or service you can feasibly trust. But how is it to find these engineers? What should you be looking for in an installer who can get you up and running with a fantastic new boiler sooner rather than later?

Let’s break down what you need to look for when choosing the right boiler installer, and what the true hallmarks of a great heating service actually are.

Always Research First

  • It is crucial that you never go with the first boiler installer you find. Yes – they may have some great deals, and they might talk a good talk – but until you get a good idea of what else is out there, you can never really be sure that you’re getting the best possible service.
  • We recommend that you research at least three different installer companies before you make a decision. By research, this means taking a look at their websites, their social media, and their credentials. The absolute best heating engineers in your area should also have a clear list of accreditations and qualifications.
  • Not only that, but you should always look at what previous customers have to say. You can find honest reviews through social media and Google’s business listings, for example. In many cases, boiler installers will list testimonials on their websites. However, you may find that these more ‘public’ reviews, such as ones on websites such as Checkatrade, are more trustworthy.
  • If all else fails, try and grab a recommendation or two from people you know and trust. Word of mouth still holds a lot of weight in this day and age!

Talking With Your Engineer

  • You should also be ready to pick up the phone and actually speak to your prospective engineer ahead of time. It is easy to just leave the nitty-gritty to the experts and to trust that they will do their best for you. In a perfect world, yes, that would be amazing!
  • However, do make sure to actually chat with your prospective hires before you agree to anything. Check that they have the relevant certificates and qualifications to do what you need them to do.
  • Do also be careful that you’re not ‘going too cheap’. Just because a service is affordable doesn’t mean it’s going to be worthwhile. Some cowboy traders, unfortunately, mask their lack of expertise in extremely low prices.
  • Do check that your engineers are insured for public liability, that they have Gas Safe registration status, and that you actually have a local address and telephone number for them to hand.
  • You should also double-check reviews and references with your installer over the phone, too, wherever possible.

What Not To Do

There are, of course, a few things you absolutely must not do when you start choosing the right boiler installer.

For example, always make sure to get quotes down in writing. ‘Verbal contracts’ are not provable, and you may end up incurring extra costs without realising it.

You shouldn’t ever feel forced into a deal or job with an engineer who can’t prove their certifications or their insurance status. These two aspects will always confirm whether or not you are working with someone trustworthy and experienced.

You should also avoid trading with anyone who can’t give you a guarantee or some form of fallback if their work goes awry, or if it causes damage to your property, etc.

Believe it or not, you should also try and only trade with people you can get a hold of. If boiler companies are avoiding calls or simply don’t deal with you directly, they are hardly going to be people you can trust.

What Does a Great Boiler Installer Look Like?

Expert Boiler Installation Man Working

The best boiler installer is one who is open, honest, has all the relevant documents and certificates to hand, and who will always be willing to chat with you and answer any questions.

Untrustworthy or shady installers (i.e. cowboys) are likely to dodge around certain questions, or will keep you waiting. This isn’t something you can toy around with. You need straight answers, you need confident confirmations, and you need proof that your installer is going to do a great job.

The best installers should also be friendly, polite, and should also give you time to speak. The worst engineers will control conversations and make assumptions. Never be tempted to do business with these types of people!

Things To Prepare

Before you speak with a boiler installer or heating engineer, it pays to have a few answers to boiler and heating questions to hand before you start angling for quotes.

For example, consider how much you use your boiler. How many rooms do you have? How many people are in the house for how long each day? Do you use a lot of hot water? Do you want to set up new systems and appliances that will use your boiler intensively in future?

Preparing these answers will help your boiler installer to find the best fit for you – whether it’s the commonly installed combi boiler, or whether another type such as an electric boiler, condensing boiler, system boiler, back boiler or LPG boiler are more suited to you. What’s more, it will save you a lot of time in back-and-forth, as well as in terms of potential costs.

Choose a Local Engineer

Going for a local heating engineer or boiler installer means you always have someone close by who can help. It also means that you’re more likely to get consistent levels of care compared to national firms and brands.
